The first week of October has passed, and while we're expecting to see a number of hardware and software launches from Apple in the coming weeks, there's no sign of a media event in the works.

top-stories-8oct2022.jpg

This week also saw the launch of the iPhone 14 Plus, the last member of the iPhone 14 lineup to become available following last month's introduction. We're also looking forward to operating system updates coming soon, with a bug fix iOS update likely imminent and a more substantial iOS 16.1 one coming alongside iPadOS 16 and macOS Ventura, so read on for details on these stories and more!

Apple Event Unlikely This October Despite Many New Devices Expected

While new iPad and Mac models are expected to be announced this month, Bloomberg's Mark Gurman believes that Apple is unlikely to hold a media event in October this year.

Gurman said "the big iPhone 14 unveiling last month was probably it for Apple in 2022 in terms of major presentations," suggesting that any more new products this year would be announced with press releases, media briefings, and updates to Apple's online store.

Updated versions of the iPad Pro, MacBook Pro, and Mac mini — all with M2 series chips — are "highly likely to launch" before the end of 2022, according to Gurman. He also said an updated Apple TV with an A14 chip and extra RAM was "getting closer and could potentially launch this year."

Apple Preparing iOS 16.0.3 With More Bug Fixes Following iPhone 14 Launch

iOS 16.0.2 was released last month with several bug fixes for iPhone 14 issues, excessive copy and paste permission prompts, and more. Now, evidence suggests that Apple is planning to release iOS 16.0.3 with additional bug fixes soon.

There are several remaining iOS 16 bugs that iOS 16.0.3 would hopefully address, including an issue with low volume during CarPlay phone calls placed with iPhone 14 Pro models, a string of text that can crash the Mail app, and more.

Apple Rumored to Launch 27" Mini-LED Display in Q1 2023

Apple is planning to launch an external monitor with a 27-inch mini-LED display in the first quarter of 2023, according to Display Supply Chain Consultants (DSCC) analyst Ross Young.

Apple's upcoming display is said to feature mini-LED technology along with ProMotion support, allowing for up to a 120Hz refresh rate. It's unclear if the monitor would be branded as a Studio Display or have a different name.

iPhone 14 Plus Reviews: Multi-Day Battery Life

The first reviews of the iPhone 14 Plus hit just ahead of its launch on Friday, providing a closer look at the device in action.

Reviews highlighted the iPhone 14 Plus' impressively long battery life, while other new features include car crash detection, upcoming support for emergency texting via satellite starting in the U.S. and Canada, improved front and rear cameras, and more. U.S. pricing starts at $899.

EU Passes Law to Switch iPhone to USB-C by End of 2024

The European Parliament this week voted overwhelmingly in favor of enforcing USB-C as a common charging port across a wide range of devices, including the iPhone and AirPods, by the end of 2024.

Rumors suggest that all iPhone 15 models will be equipped with a USB-C port next year, ahead of the EU's deadline. AirPods cases and MagSafe accessories are also expected to switch to USB-C.

10 New iOS 16 Features Coming Later This Year

iOS 16 was released to the public over three weeks ago with a customizable Lock Screen, the ability to edit recently sent iMessages, and much more. And in the coming months, iPhone and iPad users have even more new features to look forward to.

Im very very curious about m2 pro

Will it be built on n3 ? Will it have as many efficiency cores as the MacBook Air (4E instead of 2) .that would make the battery much better !

“the big iPhone 14 unveiling last month was probably it for Apple”

Was that big? The watch was more significan imo.

I doubt it. Examples

A M2 MBA SoC requirements is different than the M1 Pro/Max/Ultra. You’re also see by the no change in efficiency cores, only couple of GPU cores added.

Also it’s only been 11 months since 14”/16” MBPs were announced. The M2 was announced 20 months after the M1.

What exactly do you doubt ? That it won’t come by this month, nor have more efficiency cores?

Yeah I agree the requirements are different ,but I think there have been a lot of reports/rumors of a 12c chip (with 4e and 8p) -contradict me if I’m wrong-

And even pros may need a good battery ,for example a professional photographer may need his machine to use very little power when he answers to his mails ,prepares a contract ,etc .

It's pretty bad when viewing a file in the Documents app, it repeatedly crashes iOS 16 and I have to hold the side button to turn it back on. Maximum security at the root level. Garbageo_O

On both points, cores types utilized given SoC design for performance over energy savings and the release date. :)

What’s missing in this desire for a M2 SoC update to M1 Pro/Max is that a higher performance would only drain MBP batteries even faster. I thought the M2 with its 18% faster CPU, other changes was nice but Apple needs to update other M1 macs with base M2 first. The 14”/16” MBP are real workstations comparably.

Who cares that "higher performance would only drain MBP batteries even faster?"
A) MBPs have great battery life, so losing some is no big deal.
B) Most need for performance is in desktop (mains powered) mode, and it is easy enough to throttle a box to save on battery if battery life is somehow critical.

Note that my expectation is that many thousands of lines of decluttered code is a real benefit of M2.

Don't most rumours point to there being more efficiency cores in the pro versions of the M2 chips than the M1 Pro chips?

The rumors suggested that CPU core and GPU cores would increase to a max of 2 more CPU cores and 6 more GPU cores. No change to efficiency cores numbering two. Obviously that would also mean the same chips with more cores would cost more. Given the past time lines to AS evolution I never thought of this occurring this year. We have so many products no shows in 2022 and the rumors started to circulate that Apple was going to leapfrog right to M2 pros without any thought to how slow new AS releases have been occurring.

All I want from this minor update is fixed battery life for iPhone 14 Pro Max. I haven't had such short battery life way back since I owned the iPhone X. I don't even run battery heavy apps on it. I could last at least 2 to 2 and half days on iPhone 11 Pro Max and 13 Pro Max.

After buying two Studio Displays, I have to admit i'll be gutted if the promotion ones are priced at a similar amount.

That large of a change is most likely due to some specific operational issue that you could improve on if you can figure out what it is. Not necessarily something you pro-actively changed, but something like a brighter display setting that the new phone chose to give you, or Photos keeping you in the app (huge battery drainer) if you do not actively leave it, etc.

Good luck finding the cause!

I don’t believe the new Mac Pro won’t carry an event for it. It’s a mark in Apple’s history, such as the first M1, and the last and probably the most awaited Mac. Well, I think we Apple users are curious to see it.

Agreed, after all this time the new Mac Pro needs to be a big deal, justifying an event. But IMO a new MP also requires better chips than those available to ship in 2022; M2 Ultra is not enough. Ergo no new MP and no event.

Originally we thought the M1 Ultra (March 2022) would be doubled for the next Mac Pro.

I did not. IMO the M1 Ultra is a kludge; OK for the (sweet) midrange Studio but not enough for what a new Mac Pro needs to be, even if the Ultra was 4x or whatever. The world has waited so long for a new MP that Apple must have a more elegant solution than simply multiples of Ultra.

Just my $0.02.

If not interconnected SoC with more and more cores, then you get stuck with separate modules with SoC’s with slower interconnections. Everything with AS Macs is soldered not like Intel Mac Pros with CCAs. Guess this why it’s taking Apple so long to show the successor. I also think Apple could rack multiple Mac Studios and make MacOS treat them collectively as a super computer.

As to why it’s taking Apple so long to show the successor, IMO one reason may be that Apple saw usage of the 3nm chip process as part of their Mac Pro solution, and 3nm is still a very young process.

Your suggestion that Apple could rack multiple Mac Studios and make MacOS treat them collectively as a super computer is certainly logical, but that would be a PC-side type of solution. Apple might use such a solution for a future Studio upgrade like a double-Ultra, but it seems unlikely for the MP.

IMO Apple will do something dramatic with Apple silicon - like Apple did when it introduced the M1s and knocked the industry's socks off. A powerful new chip with superb performance, elegant and all Apple.

Edit: Note that if Apple does make a powerful new MP chip with superb performance it makes stacking of Ultras much less likely since Apple could instead use lower performance versions of the MP chip instead.
