The situation is that I bought my wife a Toshiba laptop in Japan in 2002. It's a pentium 4 2.2Ghz, 256RM, 40GB HD, 15" monitor. In fact, here's a link to it: http://dynabook.com/pc/catalog/dynabook/020620p5/index_j.htm
So about a year ago the thing crapped in. But, money being tight, we weren't able to do much about it until now. To make a long story short, it needs a new motherboard and to replace it is probably going to work out to be $500 once all is said and done.
The dilemma is that thankfully since the windoze pos broke, she's become quite a mac fan (a friend gave her an old imac g3). So we were hoping that we could fix the Toshiba machine, sell it and then buy a mac with the proceeds (she wants a new imac). However, looking on the market now, I can't see how we could even recover the costs. I paid $2,500 for it new just a few years ago, but now... well, windoze machines seem to lose their value, if you hadn't noticed.
So I guess my question is, am I right? Could we only expect a few hundred for the machine now? Is it worth the $500 to get it fixed?
My wife is totally attached to mac now, I'd hate to have to tell her to hang on to the old laptop...
Thanks MR peeps for your advice!
