i was reading on the apple discussion forum that the 800Mhz iBook (both 12 and 14 models probably) have 2 different combo drives, a sony combo drive in some ibooks, and a toshiba combo drive in others, people were saying that the toshiba combo drive usually only burns at 4x (cd-r) when it should be burning at 16x....and the toshiba model is pretty quiet...i havent heard much about the sony model, which combo drive does your 800Mhz iBook (if you got one) have? it should say in the apple system profiler
