Toslink cable not working

I have a toslink cable going from my Macbook Pro, to my 32" Vizio. It fits 100% in both ports (3.5mm headphone jack) and the optical "audio out" port on the TV, and the red lights are on on both ends. Im not getting any sound out of my TV. Any tips?

Check System Preferences > Sound > Output or OPTION/Alt click the sound/volume icon in the Menu Bar and tell us, what is listed and checked as Output Device.
