was just about to make a purchase, then saw here many reports of awful speaker quality on the 32gb model (but not the 8gb)... can someone with a 64gb please inform us as to the quality of theirs? much thanks!

I have the 32 GB 3rd gen, and my experience is that the speaker sounds much better than the one on my 2nd gen Touch. The 8 GB Touch is a 2nd gen, so I'm confused by the reports that some people feel that the 2nd gen sounds better than a 3rd gen.
Essentially, the 64gb and the 32gb are the same iPods (materials, assembly, etc) except the 64gb has greater storage (the 64gb and the 32gb should sound the same). If there is indeed an issue with the sound in the 32gb touch, I would wait a few weeks for Apple to come out with the next batch (hopefully with fixes) rather than hoping a 64gb sounds better.
I don't know why capacity makes a difference in speaker quality.
If anything, compare the 2G and the 3G, not 3G and 3G.
