I haven't never owned a MacBook with a Touch ID, just the original MacBook 12 and several iPad Pros. I am wondering, does the Touch ID work in the same way as touch on the iPad pads and iPhones, where it can be used in lieu of passwords on websites set up to work with touch instead of passwords? Or is it just for getting into the laptop without a password? I apologize for the elementary question. I just want to make sure that this is not one of the many instances in which the MAC environment is behind the iOS.

There are settings to dictate how you want Touch ID to be used:
