The Touch ID on my Magic Keyboard 2 (iMac 2021 24") has suddenly stopped working for no obvious reason. It used to work fine.

The system setting is either greyed out or when it is not I cannot register any new finger and get below-attached error. No matter if connected using a lightning cable or Bluetooth.

Does anyone know if there is any troubleshooting for this?

I tried to restart several times. Even tried to create a new user account. It is always either the above error, greyed out screen or sometimes the touch ID icon is completely missing from the system preferences until I restart.

Whatever it is it appears to be a sw problem on my iMac. The Touch ID keyboard seems to work fine if I connect it to my Macbook Air via a lighting cable. I wonder if there is a way of restoring this without having to reinstall OS or something nuclear.

Do you backup with Time Machine? If yes, then restore from Time Machine to a time you know it was working.

Can you create a new user on your iMac and set up Touch ID for the new user? This would rule out a hardware issue.

Are you using any apps like Audio Hijack that installs (with permission) whatever the new kind of Kernel extensions are called in Monterey?

ACE is actually a standard audio plug-in, not a kernel extension. However, it receives enhanced privileges to access your system's audio, so Apple uses their existing kernel extension verification system on MacOS 11 and MacOS 12 to allow ACE to load.
