Touch Screen Non-Responsive

I've had my phone for just under 1 year now, it isn't jailbroken and its software is up to date, but recently the touch screen will stop responding for short periods of time, usually 15-30 seconds and usually when I'm unlocking it, I can't move the slide to unlock, does anyone know whats causing this?

This same thing was happening to me with my 3G right out of the box. It would stop working intermittently, most of the time on the lock screen, but also randomly during every day use. I took it to the genius bar and managed to replicate the problem so they gave me a new iPhone (refurb)
