1/3 times it doesn't respond to my touch. This is very disappointing to me as otherwise I like how thin and light it is. Might have to go back to the 4S or 6.
 
Something may be wrong with your 5s if the touch screen doesn't respond to a third of your touch inputs.

Yeah, it's only on specific functions like SwipeBack and typing.

My wife and I each upgraded from an iPhone 4s to an iPhone 5s and we never had this issue. In fact I typed this whole thing out on my 5s and I haven't had to re-type any letters that it didn't register.

Did you restore from a backup or setup as new?

I restored from a backup, maybe I'm just adjusting to the new form factor and my thumb isn't hitting at the same angles, I'll give it some time.

I thought of another possible explanation - I'm sitting her toying with the 5S and 4S and I realized the 5S is brand new and so is a lot smoother and more slippery, I'm probably getting more grip and therefore more solid follow through/contact on my swipes/typing than on the slick 5S.
