iPod touch Touch turning off completely in pocket?

I keep my touch in my front pants pocket in a snug fitting sleeve. I've noticed multiple times it must push up against something because when I take it out of my pocket it won't turn on a the home key & I need to hold down the power button tp completely restart. Sometimes it comes on estarts with correct date other times it resets to dec 31st 2000. I thought you had to hold down sleep wake Button & slide to turn off?

Has anyone else had this happen?

Sounds like some hardware/software defect to me
