this is sorta cool, a free app that simulates the touch bar:

first time i ran it (10.12.2pb3), it logged me out, but it's been working for a while now.

not great on a 12" macbook; just that it takes up screen real estate. and no thumb sign-in..
but interesting to try (it changes per app)...

I would love to see someone create a more in depth iPad app using this, one that has a keyboard on the ipad along with the bar, and the ability to turn it on and off or place it above or below the keys on the iPad. I have my workspace setup where I always have my iPad Pro laying on the desk in front of my iMac, and then my keyboard in front of the ipad. I would love to see the iPad have a "desktop" mode to work in tandem with a Mac.
