TouchID suddenly way more miss than hit

I am using an iPhone SE that I bought at its launch. I am running the latest iOS 10 release and just suddenly the past few days touchID has not been recognizing my fingerprint hardly at all.

I am familiar with touchID's usual issues and quirks and this is way different...

I have deleted and re added fingerprints twice.

Is it a hardware issue likely? I can't find any specifics on this.

Did you try cleaning it a bit?

Maybe try restore as new. If it persists take it in to a Apple store if possible.

Try retraining it. This makes it better able to recognize your print.

When retraining it, use the lower (middle) part of the prints rather than the tips. As winter approaches, our skin gets dry, especially the tips of the fingers.

Same here, thought it may be the latest update. Have to lay my finger on home button a little longer. No problem with AP though.
