This is the second time it has happended on my 2016 15” mbp. The first time it started working after I pushed it around, but now no luck. It doesn’t physically click anymore as if it is stuck.

Any ideas other than a trip to Apple?

The trackpad on the 2016 and 2017 MBP aren't physically able to click - they're a solid glass surface. You feel the click due to the taptic engine built into it. So it seems like this is what doesn't react. Have you checked your touchpad settings? Have you done a PRAM reset?
