Hello everyone. I'm new to the forum, so feel free to rip on me if I'm not posting in the right place or anything of the sort.

I'm working with two 80GB Classics right now that happen to be on the fritz. My first one has the red X of death, directing me to apples support website, and the other has a connection problem where it freezes my itunes when I try to sync. I've been using an iBook G4 with both of these, with the music stored in a WD Mac-formatted 500GB passport.

The first, the X'd pod, demands a restore through putting it into disk mode as apple's support page directs. The problem is it seems the ipod won't go into disk mode, it can only reset or enter diagnostic mode. I ran diagnostic and it stopped on the HD saying it can't open the disk, reading as such:
"HDD SPEC: [Can't Open Device] ERROR! Diag Halt"
My guess is the HD is either disconnected or fried unless any of you have other ideas. Uhh, I've searched all over for anything on opening these new Classic models to take a look inside/replace parts, but my search has been to no avail as of now.

Now this second iPod I've got is my girlfriend's, who originally was having trouble with the songs not playing when she selected them. She said she hadn't updated it or registered her ipod since she got it when they first came out on account of her collecting music from her friend's computers, but my itunes says the software is up to date. I restored the pod and began to sync it to my itunes after taking a bit of the songs from it using ipodrip, but after the restore it began to load the songs and stopped after about 2GB of music (out of 50) and the progress bar halted. The ipod went from saying "synchronizing" to "connected" and itunes stopped working when I tried to disconnect. After restoring a few times and attempting to load the songs in both automatic and manual sync and watching it stop after a few hundred songs, it stopped being able to be recoverd, displaying that "the ipod contains files being used by another application", even though itunes is the only thing I've been running.
The HD was fine when I ran diagnosis, and it says the disk is okay when I ran the ipod in Disk Utility. I'm baffled over this, since I've never heard of a problem like this anywhere.

I would really like to know if it's possible to open these little buggers to see if I just need to replace some cables or possibly switch the HD over to one to splice together one working iPod.
Please, any knowledge you guys thing I'll find useful will be greatly appreciated. :)

Edit: oh I'm running on OS X 10.5.6 with Processor 1.33 GHz PowerPC G4 and Memory 1.25 GB ram, if that helps.

I will offer my advice for the second (your girlfriend's iPod):
I would first ensure all of your mp3s are good by using this link. Then I'd reformat her iPod, restore it, and then try syncing again. All of the issues I've read about it have been cured with this approach. Here is the forum where one person offered some advice on a similar problem that I had here.
Best of luck. :apple:

Okay. I think i found the problem for my girlfriend's ipod, which is that the newest ipod updater (2006-6-28 is what I have) says that the type of ipod is not supported, even though the display of supported models clearly shows that v1.1.2 is supported. It says that to the ipod for every early version of updater that I have as well.

Don't try and use the updater, reformat using your OS and then use iTunes to restore. The iPod updaters are worthless for this problem in my experience.

You said that you have the songs, so I don't know why you would be afraid of reformatting the iPod.

Thanks. I've tried restoring the ipod a few times, but when the restore display is loading on the ipod the screen will flash for a second and then reconnect. I'm not sure if it's getting a full restore, and it's only syncing about 2GB before the ipod can't sync anymore and freezes itunes/itself.

Beyond that, I'm not very ipod savvy so I'm not exactly sure what steps to take to reformat before restoring. I've read somewhere about reformatting in disk utility, but I've also read to stay away from disk utility.
Hate to say it, but when the reformat is concerned, I'm a little confused..

Help!

So I successfully used the Pod to Mac software once, but now i added more videos to my ipod classic, and when I tried to upload this time, the new videos did not work, do i have to delete my itunes library in order to do this?

I did not want to delete my entire itunes library without knowing what I was doing

Thanks!
