Wow! To my surprise, I can not find Apple's version of a toughbook! The only thing i have found is some dude used a Panasonic Toughbook and ran OSX in it.

Where and when can I get a Mac Toughbook?

You can probably find a hardened case for a Mac. That is about as close as you will get without doing a hackintosh on a Panasonic.

hmmm, interesting. Where would I find a hardened case? Is this something I can slide a MB or MBP into?

Panasonic's Toughbook is a lot more than just an outer shell. The internals are designed to withstand the inertia of an impact and the outer shell is designed to withstand heat, cold, liquid and debris. It comes at a cost, in both weight and price.

The shells available for Macs will save it from a scratch due to mild careless handling. I would advise against dropping it from a standing height, though.

Indeed. I know the world of Mil-STD drop testing and sealing very very well. You really have to look at the specs closely to see what you are getting (yes even with Panasonic) because features such as " hard drive shock absorption" often are mainly marketing terms. Its a devices ability to withstand the actual test and the resulting rating that tell you its level of ruggedness.
