TP-Link has launched a new Smart In-Wall Outlet under its Tapo brand, bundling Matter support and a feature that lets users monitor the energy usage of connected devices.

The Tapo P210M includes overcharge protection, meaning when connected devices are fully charged, the outlet switches off. The 15A/1800W outlet also features Power Protection, which automatically turns off devices when the power exceeds a user-specified threshold.

The aforementioned energy monitoring is accessed via the Tapo app, providing tracking of the outlet's energy use through stats and charts. Users can save money on their bills by scheduling devices to turn off during periods of inactivity. Note that this dual-socket model also has manual on/off buttons for each outlet.

The all-important Matter support over Wi-Fi eliminates the need for an additional hub, but a controller is necessary. In Apple Home terms, that equates to an Apple TV 4K (2021 and 2022 models), HomePod (both generations), or HomePod mini.

The Tapo Smart Wi-Fi Outlet retails at $30, but it is currently listed as on sale at Amazon.com, with a 33% discount bringing the price below $20.

I wonder how physically big this receptacle is. It’s not a great idea to cram something like this into an already packed electrical box.

Other than that concern, love it, I can think of several use cases for this.

1.73” plus wires. Shows on Amazon.

Why are so many manufacturers completely ignoring the fact that thread exists? My thinking is it’s cheaper to use Wi-Fi. This sucks, I refuse to buy anymore non thread devices

My thread devices work much more reliably than my non-thread devices. I agree with your distain.

Yeah, I'm not buying any more non-thread things now that I have a few and see how great it works

Have had marvelous success with some Govee plugs w/ Matter support

I'm slowly replacing my wyze cams with tapo cams. My tp-link stuff has been pretty solid, so maybe it'll be worth moving my home stuff there in a few more years. It's z-wave now with a bunch of other one-offs.

Be wary of purchasing Wi-Fi smart devices that require installation. Most Wi-Fi devices will inevitably fail to connect, and may require resetting the circuit breaker to reconnect.

This is so cool and at such a reasonable price! I’ll definitely be looking for any relevant use cases for this for me.

My Lutron switch has a piece you can pull that cuts the power

Looks like it is a good product. The automatic cutoff above the specified threshold is a very useful feature. With the ongoing discount, it seems like it will be a good purchase.
