I am NOT talking about polycarbonate hard cases. ONLY TPU / gel cases. Has anyone had their iPhone scratched by dirt/dust that is trapped between TPU and iPhone??

I am debating now between Totallee clear TPU case vs. using Apple Leather case.

Thanks in advance.

There are millions of iPhones out there. Most likely yes.
I've used TPU cases on many phones over the years, never had any scratching anywhere on my phones. That said, I don't live in a sandy environment... I'm in Ohio 600 miles from the nearest ocean. I also work a desk job w/ travel involved... so no construction or work that puts me in "dusty" environments.

I've also never scratched a screen (even without screen protectors which I've never used before this year). Your mileage may vary. I DO get pocket lint accumulation under the TPU cases though. I'm currently rocking an Apple leather case on my 12 Pro Max.

It's not the case itself but grit that gets in there as I'm sure you know. I don't think any one particular case is better than the other unless it's a sealed case like a Life-proof type of case. I just take my phone out regularly to clean it and have never gotten scratches using basic TPU cases or any other for that matter.

Good advice. I was hoping that since TPU is a softer material (than say polycarbonate/hard plastic), then the dirt/etc won’t be crushed against the phone surface and scratch the phone...kinda like Apple leather and silicone inners have microfiber lining.

The microfibre lining also helps stop any grit/dirt moving around. The grit has to move in order to create a scratch which it can easily do once inside something like a TPU case.

Damn you...why you ruin all my hopes and dreams like that?!

I've never used a case with the microfiber on the inside, I have friends that swear by them, but again is it the microfiber preventing scratches or how the phone is cared for? I don't know. Sounds stupid, but I actually carry my phone in a drawstring sun glass pouch when it's in my pocket. Also nice to have that to wipe the screen clean when needed. Yup I know, it's overboard, but when I sell my phone to buy a new one, it's usually MINT, so yeah...

I know I'm late to this discussion, but "yes", I have absolutely had my iPhone 7 scratched from the grit inside a TPU case. I was completely ignorant about this issue; until I took it out (after a year or two in the case) I never considered the possibility, but not only was the grit plentiful, but the scratches were all over the edges and corners and quite noticeable. And this from a person who keeps the phone in a pocket or briefcase when not in use. No beach, no hiking, no sandy places. Ugh. Lesson learned; I think I'll save my money and try the "naked" approach, since I can't get a dime in resale.
