In the years past, we lifeless individuals have used a few tools to track the progress of our pre-ordered iPhones.
Here are the tools I've seen used with some instructions:
Apple Support Profile (https://supportprofile.apple.com/) - This is a list of all the devices associated with your Apple ID. As soon as you have been allocated a unit, your new iPhone's serial number will appear in your account.
SNDeepInfo (http://sndeep.info/en) - This website gives you information linked to the serial number you found from your Apple Support Profile. This website will tell you the build week of your device which will help you get a more accurate timeframe of transit and arrival.
FlightAware (https://flightaware.com/) - You can use this tool to track all UPS/FedEx flights to and from the states. Historically, around launch time of a new iPhone, look out for flights coming from Shenzhen, China, Hong Kong, and if I remember correctly, Korea.
UPS Tracking (https://www.ups.com/WebTracking/track?loc=en_US&WT.svl=PNRO_L1): Both UPS and FedEx have the Track by reference feature. Your order number and/or phone number will be used as a reference for your shipment. You can use these numbers in conjunction with the Track by reference feature to get your tracking number early if the label is generated. In addition, if you have UPS My Choice, there are SOME additional options to you to make your delivery more convenient but there are quite a few restrictions in place and UPS normally makes those available (and blames them on Apple).
FedEx Tracking (https://www.fedex.com/apps/fedextrack/?action=altref&cntry_code=us): See above.
