tracking read emails in Apple Mail

Is there a way to track read emails in Apple Mail? I know I can do it with Outlook, but I don't want to install a Microsoft product on my virus free Mac.

Viruses often found in Windows executables aren't going to affect OS X other than taking up however many kilobytes of disk space.
