First off, it knows what course you're on and loads quickly. It uses the watch gps, not your phone. It takes a few holes to figure out how to enter clubs and strokes. When it works well, it detects your stroke and revords the distance. You have to tell it what club you hit. It also scores your swing and putting tempos. Sometimes you have to delete a stroke it thinks you made. It can take a bit to figure all this out. When you do, it keeps a record of your average distance with each club. Pretty helpful after you get a few rounds into the app.
