I have a 13 inch MacBook Pro, and it has just recently started acting funny with the trackpad. It sometimes, works, and sometimes doesn't . And now matter what I set up in the System Preferences under "TrackPad", if I restart the computer the reset to default settings and I have to start all over again, and enable "Tap to Click" and "Secondary click".

Would this be a hardware or software issue, and how can I test it?

try connecting your trackpad with a different mac and vice versa mate
if it is still not working, it might be a hardware issue :(

I forgot to mention, it is the built in Trackpad, not an external. So that is impossible for me to try. Thanks for the tip though.

My trackpad also would lose its "tap to click function," forcing me to reset it. However, for some reason, it stopped when I started logging out before putting the computer to sleep.
