Trackpad on TiBook gives up on me!

I have a recurrent but unpredictable problem on my G4 PowerBook, OS 10.3. After say an hour of heavy clicking the arrow pointer will freeze on the screen. All other functions continue to work (navigation by key strokes) Sometimes this can be resolved by closing and reopening the screen, but then the mouse will tend go again within a few minutes. A full restart solves the problem for longer, but at soon enough the same behaviour recurs. I've tried using my USB mouse, but it seems to behave in the same way.

Any pointers (excuse the pun) gratefully received.
