The trackpad on my mid-2012 MBA increasingly takes several hard presses to respond. Is it unusual for trackpads to wear out at this age?

sounds like it may just need to be adjusted, if not; battery bulging may be the suspect...

Something similar on my daughter's 2011 13-MBA. The battery was worn/bulging, and had to press really hard on the trackpad to get a response. Replacing the battery and the trackpad worked.

its possible ur battery is buldging, causing it to press up against the trackpad. that causes the symptoms your describing.
take it to an apple store and ask them to have a look.

Is there any other way to tell whether the battery is bulging? The closest Apple store is more than two hours away. FWIW, battery life is still above 80 percent. Would deformity cut into capacity? Thanks.

It most likely wont cut into the capacity, atleast not for a while or not significantly. However the cell that is buldging will most likely fail completely, then you will notice a capacity drop.

You coukd always open the macbook up, then you would see if its buldged
