Wanted to see if any opinions:

Apple's trade in quote for my 27" 2017 i7 iMac is $1170. I bought the new M1 MacBook Pro and its the real deal so torn as to whether I should trade it in while its actually worth something (I paid $2579+ tax for in in Nov 2017), especially because I can't use the display as an external monitor and have other displays to plug my M1 MBP into when I need the bigger screen.

Im also not willing to sell through eBay, whatever for a higher price, just not worth the hassle to me.

Do you think getting 40% back (including the tax) after 3 years is decent given this intel chip just got super obsoleted and should be worth a lot less in coming months/years?

The thought would be replace with a monitor to plug in the MBP or whatever the M2 Mac mini looks like; or just get the next Mx iMac.

Other options:
  1. Just keep as desktop connected to larger media drives given its super nice display - but I don't actually need the money to offset the MBP purchase, the wife and kids use it
  2. Save it and haul it up to my parents for their use or give to my sister, but don't think any of them actually "need" it, although it could be a nice-to-have
Thanks for any input!

I'd reuse/gift the iMac. I've got a 2015 i5 and it still works great. Granted Geekbench on the M1 MacMini I've ordered puts it to shame. And yes, I think the trade-in value on Intels are going to decline once the AS CPU's get the spotlight.

On the other hand at least the trade-in with Apple would be a no hassle transaction.

I'm sorta on the same boat and these are my options

I'm on a late 2012 iMac 27" Core i7

I am waiting for the redesigned iMac 27" or larger display by 2022.

Will either sell the 2012 or give to to a relative that needs it.

Similar here - 2013 iMac 27" and waiting for the Mx version to replace it with.

I am quite happy with my current M1 Mini.

Have lots of Intel Macbooks but will live with them until I need to change it out...

Since don't need the money to offset your Macbook purchase. Plus you have family that would use it. I'd just go with that.

1. Since your wife and kids use it. I'd just leave it there for them to use. Unless they already have their own personal computers as good as or better than the iMac. It would make sense to do this. Maybe move it to a better location in the house for the family to use.

2. Unless your parents or sister are hurting for money and could use a newish computer. Which would be hard for them to afford. That is one that nice. Then I'd give it to one of them first.

I would just keep it for now. Good insurance policy if you find you need to run something on an Intel Mac.
