I’ll be getting an iPhone 14 (possibly one of the higher end ones) soon. I’ll be very happy to save a decent amount rather than go for the 15 when it comes out. Verizon will give me $440 for my iPhone 12.

Here’s my question: do people think the trade-in value of my 12 is likely to go down more than the purchase price of the 14 lineup goes down, once the 15 is released?
(in other words, am I likely to save more buying now, as opposed to later?)

I appreciate that past trends can’t always be relied upon, but hopefully they can be reasonably informative.

The iPhone 15 (non-Pro) offers some pretty signficant changes compared to 14. I'd wait for it. In general, if the value of 14 goes down, so will the 12.

I would wait for the 15. Every year carriers on release day release some great trade in offer. Just wait 4-5 weeks more.
I’m more interested in saving money than getting the latest and greatest phone. When I was 10 years younger, I wanted the best phone available (and I worked for Apple, so it made sense to upgrade every year).

But if you think the carrier deals for a trade-in will be better on release day (enough to offset the decline in the trade-in value of my 12), then I’ll wait.

And of course, past performance is no guarantee of future success.

Assuming your 12 works fine I see zero relevance to upgrade a 12 to a standard 14 since there is only one generation of SoC of difference.

Upgrade your battery and keep your 12 1 or 2 extra years or if you want to upgrade now I would go straight to a 15 / 15 Pro to have relevant improvements

Apple Care isn’t going to cover just replacing an old battery, is it? There’s nothing actually wrong with it, just the usual lack of charge after 3 years.

So, the big day arrived and…

Verizon’s actually offering me a better - in absolute dollars - offer if I upgrade to a 15 instead of a 14. I can get a 15 for about $2.50 less per month than the equivalent 14.

So thats nice.
