Today I went to the store to trade in my mini for a gift card which I plan on using when I trade in my 12 pro for a 13 pro. When I go online and select a 13 Pro with 512 GB storage, the price comes to $1299. I added in a leather cover at $59. So now I am sitting at $1358. With tax of about $100 the total is $1458. So.... here is where I get lost and maybe someone can help me. When I go to check out, I apply the $400 gift card so the price should be $1058 and then I trade in for $640 so my final price should be about $418. If I look at it a different way and take the trade in off the price of the phone: $1299 + $100 (tax) - $640 = $759 + $59 (case) - $400 (gift card) I still get $418. Why is my total listed at $719 on the apple site? No matter how I have been trying to do the math, I cannot get there.... am I missing something?

It is showing the price before trade in. If you chose trade in during preorder, it shows what it will be if you don’t file through with trade in. It should adjust once they process your trade in.

Your $400 gift card isn't applied.

1299 + 59 - 640= $718 before tax

See, this is what throws me for a loop. It says:

Your Total
Subtotal $1358
Shipping FREE
Estimated Tax $100.15
Gift Card Applied $400
Amount Due Today $1058.15
Total after trade-in: $772.55 (I don't understand where this is coming from)
The next section it says

Apple Trade In. $640.00 Trade-in Value
After you send in your device, we will apply your trade-in credit to your payment method.

If they are going to give me $1058.15 - $640 I am ok with that.
If they are going to give me $772.55 - $640 I am ok with that (but still doesn't make sense so I am guessing not going to happen).

I just don't want to place my order and end up paying almost $400 more than I should be.

I appreciate your help.

Maybe I should just head to the store and make sure things make sense once they are in stock. This makes me nervous since it says its applied. See previous reply.

You are viewing your gift card as a discount instead of viewing it as cash. It’s treated as cash. Ignore it for the purpose of this calculation.

So, with the trade in, your total is $718 plus tax (1,358-640). Your trade also reduces your tax liability. A portion of your tax will be credited back to you. So after all is said and done, and you get your trade in refund, your total will have been $772.55.

The trade in within your cart also states how much they are giving you.

I don't live in a state with sales tax but here's how I think this breaks down.

$1458.15 is your total. Then they're applying the $400 gift card which means your total cost today is: $1058.15

Once they receive your trade in, the math changes to:

($1299-$640)+$59+tax = $772.55. Then you apply the $400 gift card and you should owe out of pocket $372.55.

So, you should get back $685.60 if I'm doing the math correctly. But, it would be easier to do this in store so it's applied all at once.

Just following up. The Apple Store (at least through Safari) wouldn't accept my gift card even though it was shown on their system/screen. I ended up going a different route of going through the Apple App on my phone and not including the case in the order. The gift card seemed to work in that situation. Maybe this is related to all the issues others were having trying to buy a phone with their Apple Card? Not sure.

In the end, I am not sure if it was adding the case, going through Safari, or just a fluke that made things difficult, but I was able to order anyway.

Thanks for everyone's input.
