I got the Pro Max Sierra 128GB phone last week Friday the 24th, at the same time I send in my old device for the trade-in credit, now I'm thinking I might have to return this one which has 128GB and getting the 256GB, so the question is would that affect my credit from being given to me if I return this device to upgrade to the 256GB same model Pro Max?

Seems to me that they’re two separate transactions.
Returned old iPhone for credit is one transaction.
Returned new iPhone for same model with larger storage is another.

The credit will be given to you in some method which you can use to offset the price of the more expensive bigger iPhone.

What you don’t want to happen is they end up giving you credit for the old iPhone with a gift card after you’ve purchased the newer iPhone. Then you’d be stuck with a new iPhone and a gift card with a big balance.

Why not start a chat with Apple and ask them directly?

I did this with a mbp m1 once. Sent in my old mbp for trade in. Got the credit applied to the credit card i used. However for some reason I wanted a bigger ram. So I ended up returning it, at first they only refunded partial but later I got an e-mail that the rest was going to be sent as a gift card balance.

That may be the case if you trade in your old phone which if it did get credit to your card you used for the 12 gb. It may work out.
