Trading in dvi to vga for a dvi mini to vga adapter

Ok my freind gave me his DVI to VGA adapter but I realized I need DVI mini to VGA his cord came with his mac pro and is not in resale packaging do you think the apple store will let me exchange it for the cord I need?
