Trading my edge iphone with a friend's 3g HELP

I have a friend who wants my first generation iphone edge because of the cheaper bill. He will buy the newest iphone 3g and we will trade phones. I am going to meet up with him at the store with my mother so I can change my service to 3g.

Is it possible for this to happen at the att store?
 
Thats not going to work, because when he buys the 3G AT7T requires him to sign up for a 3G data-plan.
