Transfer data between PowerPC iMac and late 2012 iMac

My 2005 PowerPC isight iMac is ageing.

If I decide to take the plunge and order a new late 2012 iMac how do I transfer the 250GB of data from my old machine to the new one quickly and easily preferable via a wired solution - noting the lack of thunderbolt on the old machine and lack of firewire on the new one.

A firewire/thunderbolt adapter that Apple sells might not work because the old iMac is firewire 400 and not 800. They don't make this easy!

I don't know if this will work in practice, but in theory, you should be able to get a Firewire 400 to Firewire 800 cable like one of these to connect to the the Thunderbolt to Firewire 800 adapter.

What about using the Gigabit Ethernet port with a Cat5e or Cat6 cable?
