My 2008 MbP logic board and video card recently crashed. My hard drive is still ok and I plan on buying a new MbP when they update soon. What is the best way to transfer my music, photos, a few other files from my old hd to my new MbP? I do not have Time Capsule.

If you have a backup of your Mac on the Time Capsule (TC) and it is current, then just use Migration Assistant to transfer data from the TC upon starting your new MBP.

Migration Assistant / Setup Assistant information:

If that is not an option, get a USB 3.0 enclosure for 2.5" S-ATA HDDs, the cost around 10 to 20 € and put the HDD in there and connect it to your new MBP.
After that either migrate or copy manually.
