Transfer iphoto photos

I've got about 5000 photos in iphoto and have just bought an external HD.
I went to copy the photos onto my new HD but when i looked at them they were all in strange folders and in a completely different order.
Does anyone know how i can copy the photos without sorting through them all or can i run a copy of iphoto on my external HD.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

You can move/copy the entire iPhoto library folder to the external (it contains all the pictures) i.e. something that looks like this



Then if you want to use this to run iPhoto from just hold down option when starting iPhoto and use the option of choose library and just browse and find the library file on your external.
