Transfer Mail from 10.5 to 10.6

I need to transfer email from an iMac running 10.5.8 to my MBP runnint 10.6.4. The MBP is not new, and both have email I need so I don't want to do something that will overwrite my current inbox/account on the MBP. What's the best way to transfer email?
