Currently all of my contacts are stored on my Nokia phone - but I want to back them up to my iPad. These are the only two devices I currently own. Does anyone know if it's possible? The only instructions I can find online require a PC/Mac as an intermediary...

You can sync your Nokia contacts to a GMail account, depending on which model Nokia phone you have. The iPad will sync (not copy, but sync) with GMail.
I know it's not exactly what you want, but it's a second copy somewhere (definition of backup)

There is also Nokia multimedia transfer application for the mac (seee Nikia website), which may help, if you cant sync to google on your Nokia. (I use an intermediary website for my E71 to sync to google).
