what are the pros and cons of transferring my DV footage directly to the computer vs. capturing it on a DVD first and/or converting that to mpeg4?

Capturing directly via FW will be faster and yield you a higher quality image. Trans-coding to DVD, then ripping the DVD into MPEG4, then trans-coding the MPEG4 back to an editable format (such as DV) will take much longer and will destroy the image quality of your footage.

For capturing directly to your computer via Firewire:

PRO:
An exact digital copy of what was recorded on tape is captured to your hard drive.

CON:
none.

For recording DV to DVD or MPEG-4:
PRO:
none.

CON:
Heavy compression and quality loss.
Pointless to do so unless you just like extra work and don't mind the quality hit.
