Hi,

I hope this is in the correct section. Currently, I'm using an 80GB external hd for time machine to backup my MBP. The 80GB drive keeps running out of space and deletes my oldest backup.

I just purchased a 1 TB Maxtor OneTouch drive and I plan to split it into two 500GB partitions. I hope to use one of the partitions for Time Machine.

Is there any way I can copy the Time Machine files in the 80GB partition into the 500GB partition without creating any problems?

Just use Disk Utility and restore the Time Machine partition to one of your new partitions.

Steps:
1) Turn off Time Machine and open Disk Utility
2) Create new partitions on new drives. It doesn't matter what name you choose for the replacement because the restore will put the old partition's name in
3) Select the Restore tab
4) Drag the old Time Machine partition into the Source box
5) Drag the new partition in Destination box.
6) Select Erase Destination and hit restore.

This will copy your old one over and then remove the old drive. In Time Machine preferences choose the new drive and it will continue when you turn Time Machine back on.
