getting another 2008 macbook pro, it will come, as he stated, wiped clean. i have my osx snow leopard on a seagate external backup HD. question is if the macbook pro im getting has El Capitan installed on it then how do i transfer everything form my back HD that has Snow Leopard.

I'm not clear on the models here. So the new Mac is a 2008 and the old one you backed up to the external disk was also a 2008? If that is the case, just option key boot to the external drive then erase the internal drive and clone the external to the internal and you are done.

Once you complete the clone shutdown and unplug the external drive. Then restart and go into System Preferences and in the Startup Disk pane select the internal as the boot drive.
