Transfer VHS to AVI or MPEG4? What Hardware/Software do I need?

I am looking for a VCR that connects to my Mac via USB. Does anyone have any experience with this. I want to convert all my old VHS tapes to a format I can play on my Mac or AppleTV.

From what I hear I should get a VCR that has manual tracking, because the Auto-tracking ones seem not to pick all the tracking issues.

Do I need a new VCR or just use my existing one with a connector cable? If so what cable do I need?

For software what can I use? can I use iMovie or do I need a third party app?

Do I just get a VCR to DVD all in one type box?

I don't really care about editing the clips.
