transfer video from a PAL 8mm camcorder

Hi - I have an old 8mm camcorder that I buoght while living in the UK and I am trying to copy from but with limited success. I can get picture and audio but the picture is always black and white only. I have tried using a Belkin USB device on a PC and also get the same when I plug the camcorder into the back of a set-top DVD recorder.

Does anyone have any idea for hardware / software (preferably Mac) to help me do this.

So you're using an A/D converter? You'll want to use firewire to transfer your video, NOT USB, try using a Mini-DV camera (Borrow a friends etc) and plug the composite 8mm into the Analog ports of the Mini-DV Device, then firewire to the mac where you'll use iMove, Final Cut, or Quicktime Pro to import...
