my dad just got a G5 and wants to put some of this old stuff on the new computer from the G4. i have a firewire cable, could we just plug that in and start dragging stuff over? or whats easier

If you install the system onto the G5 afresh, Migration Assistant will bring over most everything during the installation process. Otherwise, a firewire cable and Target Disk Mode on the G4 will have to do

You can run Migration Assistant even after you've installed, from your hard drive. If it's only a few specific things though it's probably easier just to do it the old fashioned way.
