Transferring files between computer and TC... speed issue

Hello,
I have a question regarding what kind of speed I should be getting when transferring files between my TC and my Mac Pro, which is directly connected.

For example, if I have 1,000 files in a folder and I transfer the entire folder at once, I get 1MB/sec when looking in Activity Monitor. If I should .zip up those files and transfer it as one large file, I get up to 15mb/sec. Also, when I look at my Time Machine when it's backing up, it runs very slowly. I'm getting about 5 sometimes, but it does drop to that same 1. Is this normal?
