Hey everyone,

Well I'm getting a Macbook Pro because I'm sending my secondary PC away to family relatives. My question is, can I transfer data from just the HDD alone to my mac or do I need actually use the computer?

Reason being is I can't start that specific PC because the RAM has failed. I also can't send it to my family just yet because I contain personal stuff on my HDD that I don't want them to see. So what I wanna do is keep my HDD, then transfer the data straight from the HDD to the Mac, is this possible? thanks.

You could buy a USB caddy for the HDD, fit it in the caddy and then plug it in to the Mac to copy your files (and porn ;) ) over

That is possible. Buy a drive caddie or USB to *insert interface here* cable and plug it in.

If the drive is formatted as NTFS, you won't be able to delete the data off without install MacFUSE and NTFS-3g on to your Mac. Both tools are free and I highly suggest them if you are going to be dealing with NTFS formatted drivers frequently

well, there are several options. The USB caddy is one, also you WILL need to get MAc Fuse and the NTFS for mac.

My question is this. You are giving away the PC, correct? Why not replace the ram for them (have them reimburse you possibly) and then use a ethernet or crossover cable to transfer the info. It would be probably cheaper and quicker than buying a caddy, plus you wouldn't have a need for the caddy anymore (maybe down the road)...

I set up my girl friends' Dell XPS on my shared network and just shared what folders i needed to get info off of and transferred it that way. Its pretty simple. I looked on you tube, as i had never used a mac before, or networked for that matter:)

I don't believe that is correct.
I xferred numerous files from two NTFS formatted previously PC, USB disks onto a new iMac without needing this.
AIUI Fuse is only needed for writing to NTFS. I just used my iMac 'out of the box' and didn't need to install any new apps to do this.
