Transferring files?

I have a lot of music and movies I want to transfer from my desktop (iMac) to my laptop (Macbook pro) how would I go about doing this?

I used the migration and selected ''files and folders from benjis imac'' - took 6 minutes to transfer 8GB of files but now I can't find the files on my macbook? where are they usually located once a migration has been completed?
