I've got two old iPhones: an iPhone SE (1st gen/64GB) and an iPhone 7 (32GB), and because of the SE's ageing, poor battery capacity and smaller screen size I want to transfer its contents over to the iPhone 7.
Obviously, with half the storage capacity I can't transfer everything from the SE (it's currently using around 34 GB out of its 64GB). I plan to leave out many apps that aren't essential to me to make this possible. I've also made backups of the SE with both iTunes and iMazing (both on my Mac), and transferred all the photos. As far as I understand iTunes doesn't do a full backup, while iMazing does.
What's most important for me is to transfer the phone's settings, passwords, Wifi passwords, Safari bookmarks and so on. That stuff takes a lot of time to re-enter!
What I've tried already is:
1) On the "new" phone (iPhone 7): I went to "Settings" - "General" - "Transfer or reset iPhone" - "Erase all content and settings" which I selected
2) after erasing, then restarting the iPhone presented me with a factory new iPhone "Hello!" and asked about language and country
3) next, a "Quick Start" page comes up, explaining this allos for Bluetooth-transfer from my "old" phone.
4) so I turn ON Bluetooth on my "old" phone (obviously Bluetooth is already on by default on my newly erased "new" iPhone
(a few seconds later a message pops up on my "old" iPhone, asking to use my Apple ID to configure the "new" phone. I Press "Continue"
5) I sync both phones by holding the "old" iPhone's camera over the "new iPhone's screen where a special animated image has shown up
6) from then on the transfer appears to have started, along with several questions to be answered on the "new" iPhone (if I want to use Touch ID etc.)
The problem arises when I get to "Apps and data -choose how you want to transfer apps and data to your iPhone" where I choose "Transfer directly from iPhone". Apart from the spinning "working" ring-symbol (top right corner of the screen in the "new" iPhone) which appears to take forever I'm returned to the "Quick Start" setup window (step 3 above) once again.
Does this happen because the "new" (32GB) phone doesn't have enough room for the "old" (64GB) phone's contents (or more precisely its 34GB, which is still 2GB more than the "new" phone's full storage capacity). I was expecting to be able to choose what to transfer/what to leave out, but perhaps that's not the way it works?
Is the solution to "trim" the contents of my "old" iPhone so that its contents get below 32GB, then start at step 1 (above) with the "new" phone again?
