Since i only have a 256gb hardrive id like to have itunes work out of my external. I copied my music folder from my old MBP to the new one, then took my itunes folder and copied it to the external. Then i went into itunes adv preference and choose the media folder to come from external however tried to consolidate and nothing. Not sure what im doing wrong, any help is appreciated.

Go to File-> Add to Library and select the iTunes folder you want and let it add everything. It will take long time if you have a lot of music, movies and etc..

When you change the directory in iTunes it doesn't add the files, it will only start to save new downloads to that folder.

I always just copy the entire itunes folder to the new computer into the Music folder. iTunes opens, and it works exactly like on the old computer. Seems like everything it needs is self-contained in the iTunes folder.
