Transferring large folders to external

Hi,
I have a WD MyBook 320 gig connected via firewire to my Macbook Pro. I have been copying large concerts and such off of my XP desktop and after these large copies I cannot open the folder I just copied unless I eject the drive. Is this normal with FAT32 as it is not as good with handling large files?
