Hello,

I have recently got my new iMac and am wanting to transfer a few applications I have installed on my old Macbook to the new iMac.

Since these are on CD and I do not have an external CD drive I am trying to transfer them via external hard drive.

When I copy them from the Application folder and put them on the new machine, they wont open and I get an error saying I need to update etc before opening.

On my Macbook they are all up to date, am I doing something wrong?

The applications are Final Cut Express and Office 2011.

Many thanks.

I have managed to get it working apart from Final Cut Express which I am presented with this error:

Check with the developer to make sure Final Cut Express works with this version of OS X. You may need to reinstall the application. Be sure to install any available updates for the application and OS X.

Click Report to see more detailed information and send a report to Apple.

The problem you are having is because some apps are very simple and completely self contained and can just be dragged over to a new machine. Other app like FCE in your case, install other components of the app in other folders and without all those components the app will not run. For apps like that just dragging the app to the new machine will not work.

You might try search for the FCE support folders on the old machine and moving them over also.

How did you get them working?

The others just opened when I tried copying them across again. Guess these ones didn't need the extra files stated above.

I am looking through my HDD but cant seem to locate any other folders in reference to FCE, where would I look for these?

Many thanks in advance.

Usually in ~/Library/Application Support

Click the desktop to bring focus to the Finder, then hit shift-command-g and past ~/Library/Application Support into the popup and hit enter to get to the folder.
