The other day, I was copying about 5 gigabytes worth of photos and videos that I'd taken on vacation over to my laptop. Given that the iPhone 7 has an NVMe SSD and my laptop has an older SATA SSD, you'd think the bottleneck would be the USB 2.0 protocol and I'd at least get the typical 30 MB/s transfer speeds that a typical USB 2.0 thumb drive or external HDD from 10 years ago gets, right?

Well, nope. For the most part, the transfer hovered between 10-15 MB/s. When it comes to reads, even a dollar store thumb drive is faster these days. What's going on here?
