Transferring recorded content from DVR to MacbookPro

Need help...

When I'm home, I can connect my MacbookPro to my DVR (I forget the model) via Firewire, and record anything that my DVR is showing (live or recorded content) to my computer via AVCVideoCap from the SDK 26. I'm at my family's house, trying to do the same (they have SA Explorer 8300HD) and AVCVideoCap doesn't even recognize that anything is connected.

Thoughts?

The FW port on that 8300HD is quite possibly "off" or copy-protected. The service provider would have to activate the port, I'm pretty sure. There's a procedure for checking the status that someone posted here.
