Using Macos 15.5 and iphone 18.5

I have an audio file that i exported, then converted to .m4r on my mac. It is less than 30 seconds. I connect iphone via lightning cable and the phone showed up in finder. Google said to check ‘manually manage music, movies, and tv shows.’ Then drag the file there. Didnt work. I clicked ‘manage storage’ at the top, a new window popped up and i clicked on tones. I drag the file there, didnt work. In the first window there are tabs, but nothing for ringtones.

I also opened the music app on the mac. Iphone under devices. I drag the ringtone there, still no work.

How do i do this simple operation?

Thanks for the info. This was meant for my wifes iphone, not mine. So i loaded garageband on her phone, then transferred the original song to her phone, opened it in garageband, then exported it from there.

Now i get why people on here saying apples software is going downhill 🙁
